Collecting fossils on your holiday on Rügen

Dear friends of Rügen,

Children especially love variety and adventurous activities. One exciting possibility on Rügen is to go fossil hunting.

What are fossils?

Fossils are the remains of animals or plants that have not decomposed over thousands of years but have fossilised. In the process, organic substances are transformed into inorganic ones. This is how minerals are formed. The most important prerequisite for this is the absence of oxygen. And this happens when animals or plants are tightly enclosed: Insects that drowned in tree resin or leaves that sank in the bog.

The oldest fossils known so far come from rock layers that are about 3.8 billion years old.

What fossils are there?

Fossils come in all shapes and sizes: from huge dinosaur skeletons that can be admired in museums to tiny fish-like vertebrates only a few millimetres in size. But also plant and shell imprints, snail shells, sea urchins, corals or insects.

Keep your eyes open!

The most beautiful fossils on Rügen

Actually, there are fossils on all Baltic Sea beaches in the sand, between the stones and at the water's edge. This is because the coasts are constantly changing due to wind and water. As a result, fossils are exposed or washed up. Particularly promising places, not far from the family hotel AQUAMARIS Strandresidenz Rügen, are the chalk cliffs in the Jasmund National Park, around Sassnitz and at Cape Arkona.

On the Schaabe between Glowe and Juliusruh, there are even small ambers to be found in the washed-up algae carpets.

Seek and ye shall find!

On Rügen you can discover beautiful fossils such as worm tubes, oysters, sea urchin stone cores, thunderbolts and sponges. But also flints and ambers. All you need is a good look and a container for the finds. Professional collectors also have digging tools, brushes and knives.
